Research at Bayer CropScience
In 2006, EUR 614 million, or 27 percent of the Bayer Group's research and development budget, was spent in the CropScience subgroup.
Bayer CropScience is one of the world's leading crop science companies in the fields of crop
protection, non-agricultural pest control, seeds and plant biotechnology.
In addition to classic crop protection research, Bayer CropScience also has a BioScience unit
which focuses primarily on plant biotechnology.
The main aim of research and development work in plant biotechnology is to improve the
agronomic characteristics and quality of crop plants. The technologies employed in this area
comprise all the tools required to improve important crops such as cotton, canola and rice for
producers and industry partners - from the identification of a target gene to the development of a
plant.
When a substance suitable for development is identified, its biological and toxicological
profile and behavior in the environment are investigated. In parallel to this, active substances
from other companies are tested and, if successful, are acquired. The market potential of
development candidates is analyzed, and those that are suitable are brought onto the market once
marketing authorization has been granted.
Current development projects include "passive" treatments (gels, baits), formulations for
pest control, and new herbicidal products and fungicide combinations for the lawn care and
ornamental segments of the market.
